Description

Painting background

Gauguin's Post-Impressionist style did not develop overnight. In his early days he was very influenced by impressionism.

The first self-portraits were really just that, self-portraits, with the emphasis placed on the physicality of the painted object. This is the impressionist style of painting, in which the objective of the impressionist painter is to represent exactly what the eye sees, to record the impressions of the world of colors as they are projected on the retina.

The contrasting colors and thick, simple lines of this Self-Portrait with Halo; the halo above Gauguin's head, the two apples hanging behind his ears and the serpent clutched in his hand give the work a strong fictitious and suggestive character.

Gauguin did it in the fishing village of Le Pouldu, in northwestern France. It was created in 1889 to decorate a room in an inn during his stay in the Breton town of Le Pouldu with the painters Meyer de Haan and Sérusier.
Religious symbolism can be seen in the painting, suggesting that "the apple and the serpent refer to the Garden of Eden, temptation, original sin, and the fall of man." By dividing the canvas in half, Gauguin has painted himself as a saint and a sinner, reflecting his personal mythology as an artist. At the top of the painting, Gauguin has an angel-like halo, ignoring the temptation of the apple. At the bottom of the painting, he holds a snake in his hand, reflecting his duality.

The colors used by the painter are totally flat; This feature, together with the curved lines that dominate the composition, recalls the inspiration that painters such as Gauguin and Van Gogh found in Japanese prints of the time.

In short, Gauguin later argued that painting should not be limited to recording the superficial appearance of things, as the Impressionists claimed, but rather to express the innermost emotions of the artist and the subject he represented.
