Painting background

This painting is a memory of the painful experiences that Munch's family experienced in his childhood. This painting represents the illness of his sister Sofía, 15 years old. Lung disease will take his life. She is thin and pale and has not yet lost her childish temperament. This indelible impression is deeply buried in Munch's memory. The paint is used wildly and casually, and looks like an eraser. The entire painting has a dark and gloomy tone, with a strong tragic atmosphere. When it was exhibited at Norway's annual national art exhibition, it was attacked by conservative forces. Munch had to switch to academic techniques and painted another variant of the painting, renamed "Spring", in fact he won a national scholarship and went to study in Paris.
