Self Portrait No. 415
Description
Painting background
Influenced by the ideas of Freud, Barr, and others, Schiele's works are characterized by their expressive power, depicting distorted figures and limbs, and his subjects are primarily self-portraits and portraits. In Schiele's portraits, the figures are mostly pained, helpless, and incomprehensible victims, and the neurotic lines and contrasting colors create disturbing, intense images that are shocking, reflecting the emotions of people struggling with their own disbelief. and pain as the end of consciousness descends upon them before the First World War.
Exaggerated shapes, bold and indulgent lines, and highly individual colors are the hallmarks of Schiele's various paintings. Schiele's exaggeration of objects, with passionate lines, cold broken blocks of colour, and crude brushwork, creates an artistic appeal of its own.
In terms of form, Schiele is unique. For example, most of the figures portrayed in Schiele's works are made up of straight, simple forms, which are slender, exaggerated, contracted, and strongly undulating; or the costumes of the figures are deformed and the drawings and colors of the costumes are exaggerated to give the works a strong effect of contrast. It is this subjective and purposeful composition that contributed to the unique aspect of Schiele's art. For example, in Schiele's Self-Portrait of 1910, the figure is so exaggerated that the artist's body is dislocated and bent, his fingers are strongly stretched, and his upper limbs are violently twisted. The body is devoid of flesh and curves, leaving only neurotic lines and tendons, muscles and angular geometric structures, as if to speak of inner depression and discontent with reality.
In terms of line, Schiele's talent was superior to that of his teacher, Klimt. Klimt's skill was to use smooth lines to express the softness of a woman's body, as in Beethoven's Corner Fresco sketch. In contrast, in Schiele's sketches of the human body, the artist prefers to use line subjectively to highlight the bones of the form, to show the undulating structure of the body, and to capture the form in a deconstructionist, almost cubist way. The use of line reaches an extreme in The Embrace of 1917, for example, where the lovers lie embracing, the figures are fluid, the composition is dynamic, and the focus is on the undulating geometry of the figures.
In his use of colour, Schiele also has his own distinctive character. His colors are predominantly dark and warm, using small areas of contrasting complementary colours, thus creating a powerful visual impact and giving a sense of restlessness and anguish.
