Description

Painting background

Kashmir in the late 1990s was a dangerous place, with occasional violent incidents in the media, including kidnappings and murders of Western tourists, but McCurry wanted to photograph life outside of violence. Dal Lake in Srinagar is famous for its Raj-era houseboats and lush natural landscapes. Today, tourism has plummeted due to war and conflict, but it remains the center of local economic life. In the fields by the lake, people are picking purple crocuses to make the saffron spice. The morning mist enveloped the calm lake, and everything here is like a paradise far from war. As the sun rises from the Himalayas in the distance, many local vendors bring their wares to the floating market on the lake. McCurry specially left the hotel at 6:00 or 6:30 in the morning and ran to the floating market, until 8:00 he was photographing the vegetable and flower vendors in the market. After taking a breakfast break, I would continue filming for an hour or two until the morning market ended. “I knew that the scene of the seller rowing across the lake early in the morning would be a beautiful scene, so I stayed with the seller every morning for two weeks, following them as they sold flowers, looking for the right and best time. time to shoot. The best place to shoot. One morning, I found that I was in a special passage, the light was very soft, there was a layer of mist on the lake, everything was very calm, and I finally got the picture I had been waiting for for a long time. When asked how to judge the best time to stop and shoot, McCurry replied: "It's all gut feeling." Perseverance is essential throughout the entire process, and you should keep working until you feel you have captured the best image, be it the light, the atmosphere, or the characters.
