Painting background

The first recorded auction of this work was in 1996, when the revised painting sold for US$7.7 million (approximately HK$60 million). Twelve years later, the work was again up for auction and sold at Sotheby's in New York for US$38 million (HK$238.6 million). These two sales were the highest auction records for Munch's works at the time. Now, it was again auctioned at Sotheby's in New York and sold for a sky-high price of 380 million yuan, equivalent to the estimated price. At a time when the art auction market is generally slow and struggling, this work amounts to a blockbuster and tells people that classics will always be classics. Among the collection records available, the painting “The Girl on the Bridge” was first acquired by Norton Simon in the 1960s and brought to the United States. Then in 1980, Wendell and Dorothy Cherry purchased the painting from Norton Simon. Wendell Sherry passed away in 1991 and his widow Dorothy kept the painting until 1996, when this masterpiece was auctioned at Sotheby's in New York. Although Munch's works are often considered synonymous with emotional expressions such as "screams, collapse, and despair," in fact, this pioneer of modern expressionist painting did not just paint torn, screaming blocks of color. The "Girl on the Bridge" auctioned by Sotheby's in New York is an example. Painted in 1902, this work depicts a group of country girls standing on a bridge. The entire image is still filled with Munch's iconic large-area color blocks and extremely dynamic lines, but the colors are very bright and brilliant. This makes the style of the work fresh and calm, like a corner of a peach orchard, which makes people long for it; It is completely different from Munch's masterpiece "The Scream."
