Painting background

Monet began his work in 1883 in the small town of Giverny, on the lower Seine. Then, in 1893, he bought the land in front of his house and built a Japanese-style garden on it. Monet used a stream that ran past his house to create a huge pond filled with water lilies and spanned by a humpbacked bridge. He lined the banks with willows and shrubs and retreated to this secluded aquatic realm to create his latest series of works, Water Lilies. He built a glass-walled studio on one side of the garden and set up an easel on wheels that could roll freely around the room. There he created image after image of the pond, the water lilies, and the changing reflected light at all hours of morning, day, and night. In different works of the series he included images of willows on the shore, a humpback bridge and the sky at sunset. But finally he concentrates only on the pond. He fills the entire surface of the work with images of the pond, giving the viewer the strong impression of standing in the center of the pond. The brushstrokes and pigments used to represent the flowers and water are very different from the techniques of the early Impressionists; sometimes they achieve the passionate intensity of expressionism by evoking the beauty of the surface of water.

With the help of French President Georges Clémenceau, the artist donated many of these large paintings to the state. Twenty-two of them were transferred to Paris after Monet's death in 926 and settled in the Orangerie des Tuileries, near the Louvre, where they can still be seen. Another 20 paintings of a similar size remained in the artist's studio in Giverny, since they did not need to be there, and Emil Bührle, who bought three of them during a brief visit to Giverny in 1951, was the second collector in the world who considered that it was worth buying those works. Most of his contemporaries considered these paintings as mere decorative objects, which was reflected in their very low prices. The price of this painting, Water Lilies, Green Reflections, was 24,000 francs, about half what it would have cost to buy one of Monet's classic landscapes framed in gold at the time. One of the possible reasons why Bierle decided to acquire these works was his donation to the Kunsthalle of a large extension to the exhibition building, which was being built at about the same time. It must have been easy for him to see the large painting Lily Pond in the context of the building. Bühler donated two of the paintings to the Kunsthalle Zürich with funds from an architectural fund that he himself had created. Only four years later, the Museum of Modern Art in New York purchased one of the other paintings in the series, raising its status to a new level. Monet's Irises were suddenly considered works of genius, heralding Abstract Expressionism, the movement that dominated the New York scene in the 1950s. These once-decorative works underwent a metamorphosis and became icons of modernism, central to the story. of 20th century art.
