Painting background

This painting is Munch's most pessimistic on the subject of relationships between men and women, depicting the men as weak and defeated, while the women are strong and victorious. In front of her, against the dark background of the slender tree trunks, stood a woman dressed in light color: her wide eyes, loose hair, and open bra told people what was happening.

His hands are raised in the air, his posture expresses desperation, but also strength and victory. In the lower left corner of the image, there is a man sitting with his back to the woman. He held his head in loneliness and depression. After what had just happened in the dark forest, the only contact between the two was the woman's long red hair over the man's shoulder. Munch said: "I feel like our love lies on the ground like a pile of ashes."
