Description

Painting background

Of love and life

Munch repeatedly used symbols in many of his paintings to express his view of life. To understand this, you can start with “The Three Stages of Women.” This work collects and condenses Munch's expressions of love and life.

"The three stages of women" is a painting of great symbolic meaning. And many of the images it contains appear in other Munch paintings. You can see that there are 4 people in "The Three Stages of Women", but the title is called 3 Stages.

Pure

To understand this work we can start from the copper engraving “Woman”. It can be seen that the composition and shapes of the characters in the sketch are very similar to those in "The Three Stages of Women", and in it there are only three women, so, based on the characters, it can be determined that the three stages of “The Three Stages of Women” are numbered from the left.

The first, second and third images symbolize the youth, plenitude and old age of a woman, respectively. On the left side of the sketch is a pattern with a circle on a column, which has appeared in works such as "Moonlight", "Dance of Life", "Separation" and "Sound". And it represents the reflection of the moon and water. Munch simplified this scene into geometric figures and treated it in a very symbolic way. In some paintings it even lost its realism. Its shape and color are actually very similar to Jesus in "The Crucifixion", which symbolizes something beautiful, pure, supreme and unattainable.

Youth

Munch used a woman with white blonde hair to symbolize the youth of a woman and had created many paintings on this image, such as "The Girl on the Shore", "The Sound", "Separation", "Lonely People", etc. The girl is always located on the seashore, facing the sea and looking alone in the moonlight, which shows that the girl is pure, beautiful and full of hope. The man in the painting is always far away from the girl, looking at her silently or moving away from her.

desperate

In "Separation", the girl is painted by Munch with curves like blue smoke, as if she will separate in the next second. In the blink of an eye, the girl shines under the moonlight, and the man is surrounded by darkness, with a gloomy expression, his hand is on his heart, showing that the man feels admiration. And he longs for the girl, but the girl is always desperate, but she was out of his reach, so he felt great pain.
