Painting background

Edvard Munch (1863-1944) was a world-renowned Norwegian artist and pioneer of modern Western Expressionist painting. His paintings contain strong subjectivity and a sad and depressing mood. Picasso and Matisse once absorbed their artistic nourishment. Munch's pictorial creation can be roughly divided into three stages: the first stage was from 1880 to 1890, which was influenced by French Impressionism, and his painting style was very close to Impressionism.

This second stage, 1890-1908, was a relatively mature and changing period of transformation. During which he created a large number of familiar expressionist works such as "The Scream", "Virgen María" and "Vampire". The third stage was after 1908, when schizophrenia was treated. His works were more inclined to love the natural world and his mood was relatively peaceful. Munch created more than 1,700 oil paintings, more than 1,800 prints, and more than 4,500 sketches and watercolors throughout his life, greatly influencing the growth of Expressionism in the 20th century.
