The word arearea is Tahitian (in normalized Tahitian 'ārearea) and means pastime, fun or merry and joyful entertainment. The painting shows a dog and a couple of women in the foreground, one playing a kind of flute and the other listening. The woman who listens is the central figure of the scene, she totally introduces us to her through her gaze, while with the inclination of her face she invites us to listen to the music that her partner makes; This same music is what transports us to the bottom of the scene, where we see three other people dancing before an idol. It is a scene that reflects the primitive character of Tahiti, exactly what Gauguin was looking for when he "fled" from Paris. This primitivism is also given by other factors: the face of the couple that is seated, the tropical landscape of saturated colors, the totem that is in the background of the work, the dresses with simple sarongs and finally, the instrument that they play. the woman on the left in the foreground, who is playing a typical Tahitian flute.

The artistic trend he represents is expressionism. The work recovers the concept of synesthesia, a resource that tries to merge painting and music. In addition to the decorative function, it is about activating the senses by equating the rhythm of shapes and colors with sound or movement. The woman playing the flute and the dancing figures in the background reinforce the association with music.

In an interview published in Écho de Paris in 1895, the journalist asked Gauguin why he painted red dogs and orange rivers. The painter explains that they are intentional shapes and colors. It does not pretend to represent anything real but to create a harmony of colors and lines that suggest sensations in the same way that music does.
