First impressionist experience
The strong art scene in Paris excites Van Gogh, and he is especially struck by Impressionist painting. Introduced by his brother Theo, Van Gogh met many impressionist painters, such as Lautrec and Gauguin...
Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat was completed in 1887, by which time the Impressionist influence had changed Van Gogh's painting style and the painting became brighter. In contrast to the middle-class dress of his predecessors, these self-portraits in straw hats show Van Gogh as a peasant, an indication of Van Gogh's desire for rural life.

The Self-Portrait with a Gray Felt Hat shows that Van Gogh made a significant color change, with a gray-blue background, light gray-blue eyes, gray hat and clothes, light blue bow tie, etc., and, apart from the expressionless face, his images They begin to look alive.
A “V,” his name Vincent, is written in vermilion beneath his bow tie, and there is a deep-rooted desire for recognition and to be recognized.
There is no hint of poverty in this clean and neatly dressed Van Gogh, and his determined eyes express his inner rebellion; He is poor and alone and sick, but he does not give up and expresses his strength in this state. At this point, Van Gogh gradually moves away from the darker tones of the Dutch tradition and introduces the light and color of Paris.

The painting shows Van Gogh working in a typical manner: in his artist's overalls and holding his pipe in the corner of his mouth. Smoking a pipe gave Van Gogh a feeling of peace and contentment. He felt like he had to take care of himself to produce good work. This included, of course, allowing him to smoke his pipe “in peace.”

This self-portrait, also painted in 1887, received two influences during the formative years of Van Gogh's style: on the one hand, that of the Impressionists and, on the other, that of Japanese Ukiyo-e prints.
Van Gogh was always fascinated by Ukiyo-e prints and copied many of them, and this is one of his most Ukiyo-e oriented self-portraits, with its beautiful yellow color.
Lacking a better model, Van Gogh chose to paint his own portrait on many occasions. Van Gogh was relatively happy in Paris, and in this painting, painted in the summer of 1887, he represents himself in a carefree manner.
Van Gogh made more than twenty self-portraits during his stay in Paris. Lacking funds, but still determined to hone his skills as a figure painter, he became her best model: “I deliberately bought a pretty good mirror because I needed a model.”

This painting demonstrates the artist's knowledge of post-impressionist techniques and color theory, and is one of the antitheses of early peasant studies.
