Van Gogh's self-portraits: the look from life to death – 3

A new attempt at pointillism

During this period, Van Gogh was introduced to Pointillists, such as Seurat and Hynek, and was greatly influenced by the Pointillist school. The pointillism method is one of the representative techniques of the impressionists. It is based on the different monochromatic lights in the spectrum that make up the color of everything, using dots of simple primary pigments to combine them together to create a complex range of colors on the human retina. From about 1887 Van Gogh experimented with pointillism, an attempt prior to the formation of his own definitive style, in which he clung to the movement of his subjects while simplifying other forms.

This self-portrait is considered the masterpiece of Van Gogh's artistic career. According to Taco Dibbits, director of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Van Gogh was 34 when he fell in love with the bar manager, 15 years his senior, but the romance didn't last long because they kept arguing. When Van Gogh painted this painting, he was wearing a bowler hat and jacket, and a silk scarf, as a sign of his status as a city dweller. But it is clear that he was reluctant to wear this outfit, as can be seen from the seriousness in his eyes. Paired with strong colors, the artist's dark green eyes and intense gaze dominate the dazzling flashing dots and stripes.

Heavily inked brushstrokes became a hallmark of Van Gogh's style, reflecting his response to Georges Seurat's revolutionary pointillism technique. For Seurat, however, a method based on a calm and objective science became, in van Gogh's hands, a language of intense emotion.

I prefer to paint people's eyes rather than a cathedral. As solemn as the latter is, the soul of a man, the soul of a poor whore, would interest me more. -Van Gogh

By then, Van Gogh had been in Paris for almost two years and had incorporated the technique of pointillism in his own way: streaks of color scattered in all directions, subtly forming a halo around the head. His friend Emile Bernard called these portraits "burning faces." Self-Portrait with Gray Felt Hat is a masterpiece of Van Gogh's new and unique technique as he contemplates himself growing up in Paris. At the same time, it reveals the deeply melancholic expression of a very tired Van Gogh who had not yet gotten used to city life.
