Painting background

Sunflowers is a series of oil still lifes by the Dutch painter Van Gogh. There are 2 boxes with 15 sunflowers, 1 box with 14 sunflowers, and 2 boxes with 12 sunflowers. In August 1888, the painter painted the first 15 "Sunflowers" (hidden in the National Gallery, London, England) and the first 12 "Sunflowers" (hidden in the Neues Museum, Munich, Germany) in Arles, southern France . of the work was painted the following January. The painter began work at the end of the summer of 1888 and continued until the following year. One of them was decorated by his friend Paul Gauguin in his bedroom. This series presents the images of sunflowers from blooming to fading. As for color -thanks in part to the new shades made possible by the recently launched pigments- the expressive force of the yellow line is broken. In a letter to his brother Feo, he said: "You can say that sunflowers are my flower."
