Dr. Perron, who ran St Rem's psychiatric hospital, wrote in his notes on Van Gogh's arrival that Van Gogh suffered from acute mania, hallucinatory episodes, and irregular epileptic seizures. Since then it has been theorized that he suffered from schizophrenia, although it has not been proven, and it is admitted that he probably suffered from epilepsy, especially considering that his family had a history of epilepsy.

Despite the doctor's diagnosis, Van Gogh appears to have received little actual treatment, with the artist later complaining that nothing was being done, the food was poor, and the patient was neglected. He was allowed to paint in the hospital gardens, and in June he was allowed to leave the hospital accompanied by an assistant (Jean-François Poulet) to paint in the surrounding fields. He was particularly fond of the cypress trees in the area, which he painted several times. The painting reflects his increasingly fluid brushwork, creating a sense of languid horizontal movement in rhythm, balanced by the strong vertical lines of the trees and the stems of wheat in the foreground.

The landscape, though immeasurable, has few straight lines, but it is one of Van Gogh's most classic works. It is integrated into a large band that covers the entire space. The tall, dark cypresses on one side contrast sharply with the prevailing horizontal trees, which are similar in shape. The contrast between the warm and the cold, the proportions of the pieces, the relative heights of the sky and the ground on either side, the measurable horizontal interval between the silhouettes of the distant mountains, broken twice by the trees... everything is clearly noticeable and well balanced.

It is a landscape in which the painter's perception of nature is as evident as his strong feelings. The shimmering wheat fields, the pale gray olive trees that seem to mix the colors of the painting, the fluffy swaying cypresses, the raging mountains, everything is marvelously observed, filling this space with light that comes to life. Our eyes. The light that emanates from the cold sky and the warm earth is achieved both by the play of light and shadow and by the local color -Van Gogh is liberal with the latter, looking for little consistency on this point-.

The duality of heaven and earth remains: the initial light, the softness, the roundness, the suggestion of fantastic and animal forms, the firmer, harder, more intensely colored, more contrasted, more pronounced part of the earth, perhaps the male. Or duality could be interpreted as real and vaguely longed for and imagined. Connecting them is a single upright cypress, as in Starry Night, a tableau that is otherwise the counterpart of day and night.
