Henri Matisse, "Music", 1939

The female figure is a recurring theme in many of Henri Matisse's paintings. Henri Matisse composed a work of the same title in 1910. Very dark But what a piece, along with the dance, is considered to be Matisse's greatest work.

The name of this work is also called music, but the expression is very clear. This painting is about balance and repetition. The simplicity of the exterior belies the challenges of creating the piece. To create a harmonious balance between the two figures, Matisse used a series of repetitive lines and shapes in the objects around them. For example, the diagonal of the woman's leg in the lower left corner of the painting runs through the guitar. The shape and pattern of this fruit is repeated in both the hole and the saddle of the guitar. This work's attention to compositional details supports Matisse's philosophy of art, believing that every detail is expressive and that every element of a painting - figures, objects, and the surrounding empty space - is present in every artwork in the works.
