In the late summer of 1890, when Monet was painting haystacks in the fields near his home, he was interrupted by rapidly changing light and shadow effects. Monet long pursued the goal of recording ephemeral nuances, but it was not until the Haystacks series that Monet was able to present a group of paintings with these nuances as a subject in the form of a complete series. "Haystacks, End of Summer" was created in 1890, but the date marked on the oil painting is "91." In 1891, this painting was at Durand-Ruel along with other series of haystacks. Dates exhibited in the gallery. The painting's date and uneven surface suggest that Monet retouched it in his studio before exhibition.
