Samovar 1913 Kazimir Malevich
Description
Painting background
Kazimir Malevich has always sought simplicity and abstraction as the highest expression of art. He is a creator of art for art's sake. Ignoring all visible reality, his work is based on the geometric force of simple, non-transient color gradations and combinations of basic shapes.
Regardless of all the styles of his contemporaries, the Russian artist of Polish origin born in Kiev experimented with the most modern styles: from Impressionism to Symbolism, passing through Fauvism, Futurism and Cubism, until he found his own art. He created an absolutely experimental and totally Russian art. He captured the simplest and, at the same time, universal world trends. The artistic heights reached that took the world by storm.
Finally, he achieved total abstraction, to the point that in 1915 he painted the mythical "Black Square on White", a landmark of the avant-garde in which black on a white background declares the beginning and end of painting almost completely. irregular. Thus was born his long-sought Suprematism, a movement that advocated the supremacy of nothingness and the representation of the world through geometric shapes.
After the 1917 revolution, Malevich gave up painting and devoted himself to teaching, instilling in his students the guidelines of Suprematism, which became Constructivism. A new art for a new society.
But Stalin's ideas about art did not coincide with his own: a conservative socialist realism that rejected all abstraction and sought figuration.
Malevich's dramatic late shift from non-figurative suprematism to figurativism was long regarded in the West as a regression before socialist realism was forcibly promoted in 1932. From the 1930s, when the Soviet government placed demands on art, many artists have been described as “formalists”. He had been relegated to the corner of the "bourgeoisie" and was considered an antipodes; he himself wisely stopped criticizing art in public.
By the end of the 1920s, Malevich had voluntarily abandoned "non-figurative" art, which he considered to be "wandering". Instead, he began to apply suprematist principles in his "second peasant period", representing the totemic common man; his brushwork was minimalist yet colorful, a far cry from the socialist realism of the Stalin era. In 1932, the group of Soviet avant-garde artists disbanded, which is considered the end of Soviet avant-garde art. And Malevich died of cancer in 1935. The following year, all avant-garde art disappeared from Soviet museums.
It was not until more than half a century later that Malevich's works emerged from their sealed vaults again.
