Painting background

Munch used the same images over and over again in his works of the mid-1890s: columns of light over the sea, blonde giri on the beach, lustful women dressed in red, older women dressed in black, unhappy men, etc. They combine to symbolize different human conditions and relationships. The man in love seems about to move forward, towards the future, but his path is blocked by a crimson plant, which in turn can be used as a mandela, carrying the symbolism of love and death. He seemed trapped in the present. Furthermore, the girl's long hair floated in his world, caressing his head, binding her to his sight, making it impossible for him to escape her memory.
