Painting background

The Auvers field was the last stop in Van Gogh's life. Shortly after his arrival, Vincent wrote to his brother Theo, who had just finished a turbulent stay in Provence and ended up working in a mental health facility for a year, and Theo asked a local doctor, Paul Gachet, to keep an eye on Vincent. troubled artist so that he could continue to paint properly.

At first, the idyllic village, with its thatched-roof houses and its beautiful setting on the banks of the River Oise, captivated Van Gogh. He had the ambition to present everything he saw in his own way: the countryside, the natural light, the local people. Van Gogh became a familiar character in the city, wandering through it. He started each morning with his palette and oil paints and worked in all conditions, rain, heat or at night.

Here he painted 80 pictures. Van Gogh talked about how to make a painting fit in with the others. “I am always looking for common ground, trying to find in a portrait what it has in common with a landscape, or in a landscape what it has in common with a portrait,” he wrote in a letter. On this occasion, he paired a portrait of Marguerite Gachet, in which pinks and greens predominate, with a landscape of a wheat field in which yellows and hints of green predominate (this painting). In a letter to Theo, he drew the two together, explaining: “It occurred to me that this painting would go well with the other one of a long horizontal field of wheat. To do this, one is vertical, pink, and the other pale green and goose yellow, the complementary colors of pink; but we may have to wait a long time before we can expect people to understand the wonderful relationship between one natural thing and another. The two things are perfectly explainable and complementary to each other. But some people will certainly feel it, and that will be enough to make us feel better."

Van Gogh was not the first artist to discover the charms of the Auvers countryside. In the mid-19th century, the railway opened up the Oise valley to the flourishing artistic scene of Paris. Less than an hour from the metropolis, rolling fields, picturesque rivers and rugged farming towns provided Impressionist painters with their favorite subjects: landscape and outdoor life.
