Painting background

Pierre Auguste Renoir in 1880. This painting depicts the landscape of the Normandy coast in northern France, showing Renoir's sensitivity and use of light, shadow and color. Renoir is famous for his figure paintings, especially good for depicting female figures and skin. His painting style inherited the tradition of Peter Paul Rubens (Peter Paul Rubens) and Jean-Antoine Watteau (Jean-Antoine Watteau), but also influenced by Raphael and Titian. He was one of the leading figures of the Impressionist movement, but he also resorted to a more disciplined and formal technique3.
