Yokoyama Taikan (1868-1958) was a famous modern Japanese painter.

In 1903-1904, Yokoyama traveled to India and various European countries and became convinced of the superiority of Eastern spiritual civilization. He was convinced of the superiority of Eastern spirituality.
His works are artistically grand and fantastical, always full of passion to illustrate his romantic feelings. In particular, he incorporates classical Chinese and Japanese philosophical ideals into his images, resulting in images of unique and fresh conception.

As a result of his artistic achievements, he was accepted as a member of the Salon de France in 1922, artistic envoy to the Fine Arts Exhibition in Rome in 1930, member of the Imperial Court of Arts of Japan in 1931, member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in 1935 and the first recipient of the Order of Culture of Japan in 1937. In 1937 he was awarded the first Japanese Cultural Medal. He is also considered the "father of modern Japanese painting".
