Monet painted many aquatic subjects, the best known worldwide being this painting of a misty harbor at dawn. The artist represents a foggy morning in the port of Le Havre. The red sun, reflected by the morning mist, creates a gray-green sensory world, a world that is both real and illusory, changing from moment to moment in response to sunlight, and the artist uses his magic brush to immortalize this momentary impression on the canvas, making it eternal.

The painting was exhibited at the first Independence exhibition, on April 15, 1874, and was the subject of an article by Leroy, a journalist for Noisy magazine, who gave the painting its name.
