Painting background

Paul Gauguin (1848-1903) was an iconic Post-Impressionist painter. Gauguin was born in Paris, to a journalist father and the daughter of a Peruvian writer. Gauguin's paintings are unique in the history of Western modern art for their primitive and symbolic tendencies, and for their so-called "synthesis" style. Following an early career as a sailor and merchant, Gauguin moved to Paris in 1871 to become a stockbroker. In 1883, Gauguin, who had been painting as an amateur, suddenly abandoned his promising and enviable bank position and decided to become a professional painter, at the age of 35. Initially fascinated by Impressionism, he participated in various Impressionist exhibitions, but later, driven by the aesthetic concept of Symbolism, he abandoned Impressionism, rejecting its quest for the objective reproduction of nature and advocating that the artistic image must be distinct from the objective object. and at the same time be filled with the subjective feelings of the artist.

The women of Tahiti represent a scene from the life of the working women of this island. The two images of Tahitian women sitting on the beach in the center of the scene give a sense of balance and solemnity. To highlight this particular location, Gauguin uses a flat painting technique close to that of ancient Egyptian frescoes, deliberately revealing the youthful structure of a single line of flat paint. The two figures in the painting are very interesting in an oriental sense. The decorative painting of large flat blocks of color contrasts the ocher-brown skin of the indigenous people, tanned by the intense sun, with the brightly colored dresses. Gauguin here simplifies the primitive tropical gardens, but intensifies the atmosphere. The exotic and nature-rich landscape in this painting lacks perspective and layers of color, and smacks of subjective decoration. In Paris, Gauguin rejected the "pure objectivism" of the Impressionists. He stressed the importance of expressing one's feelings in painting, allowing subjective feelings to control the painting. Western critics called his method of painting "cloisonnism." The bold flat color single line with black lines outlining the edges. Since the arrival of photography in the West in the late 19th century, the call for innovation in painting has been louder, and the delicate classical French approach to oil painting has been almost unanimously rejected. The painters demanded a new artistic language in their paintings. They believed that objects should not resemble their real counterparts. Any image formed by lines, colors and blocks must have the emotional form of the painter. In a word, "subjective objectivity" must be expressed.

The Tahitian woman is characterized by this simple "primitive beauty." Here, perspective is absent, colors are collated and abbreviated, and figures lack dimensionality, but the palette is exciting. Its decorative character provides an air of wild tribal life. The rich colors of the island and the simple working life and character of the natives lend a special grace to Gauguin's images.
