Also known as Youths of Tahiti, Gauguin's 1891 portrait of Youths of Tahiti is a true masterpiece. He loved the rugged yet wholesome and intense beauty of Tahitian women, their innocent and outspoken nature, and the warm, rich tones of their skin. He was so captivated by his models that he couldn't sacrifice them for his compound method. Thus, he represents his themes in a composite manner, but never engages in synthesis. There is not the slightest element of abstraction in the picture, every line, every tone is full of praise and joy. Gauguin's sad and desperate tone has almost disappeared from this painting. He has recovered his peace, his humanity and his joy in the middle of the forest, far from civilization and the capital of Barbier. With joy, he has rediscovered the contrasting, precise tones of light and dark and the calm, rather than frenetic, color harmonies of yesteryear. The tawny skin, blue-black hair, and purple-green clothing (slightly spaced by a few patches of pink and white) are shown against a bright background of yellow-orange in the upper half and red in the lower half, dotted with some green leaves. Even certain structural, proportional, volumetric and light expression defects turn out to be a rare thing, as they reflect the freshness and liveliness of expression and the unbridled character of the artist's work.
