Description

Painting background

This "Dance of Life" was created in 1900 and is a work from the "Life Series", the most important series of Munch's life. In this group of works, he takes as his basic theme the praise of "life, love and death" and uses symbolic and metaphorical techniques to reveal human concerns and fears. The painter chose large areas of solid color blocks and simple, soft lines, which is the essence of expressionism. In France, people often confuse Expressionism and Fauvism due to the similarity in visual effects, ignoring the very different original intentions of the two schools. The intensity and simplification of Fauvism aim to create visual effects, while Expressionism abandons excellent painting skills to concentrate on expressing the painter's inner emotions. In the center of the painting, the author depicts other dancers: some dance energetically, others forcefully kiss their dance partners, and others crowd together in various ways. Different postures express different moods at different stages of life: purity, wildness and loneliness appear alternately, but cannot escape. At the back of the crowd was a woman in a white dress who looked like the incarnation of the author and did not fit into the dance. Instead, look at everything in the world with a calm, observant gaze. The scenery of the setting sun on the farthest sea and the strange shapes projected by the setting sun on the water also add a mysterious atmosphere to the entire painting. This work uses a dance scene to reveal the innocence of a girl, the sexy charm of maturity, the loneliness and sadness after the passing of youth. It gives metaphorical meaning to the characters and also shows the painter's perception of life. In this feminine trilogy, the clear meaning is reinforced through symbolic images and colors. The theme, form and symbolic connotation are harmoniously unified here, predicting the path of a woman's life from the innocence of a girl, to the triumph of the spring breeze in adulthood, to the disillusionment of ideals after loss of youth.
