Painting background

The Bedroom in Arles (French: La Chambre à coucher, Dutch: Slaapkamer te Arles) is the title of three similar paintings by the 19th-century Dutch Post-Impressionist painter Vincent van Gogh. The three paintings were created between November 1888 and the summer of 1889, and are currently on display at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, the Art Institute of Chicago in Chicago, and the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, France. Among the three paintings is the bedroom where Van Gogh lived, located in the right wing of 2 Place Lamartine in Arles, France, known as the Yellow House. In the painting, the door on the right leads to the stairwell and the one on the left leads to the guest room, where Vincent van Gogh's friend Paul Gauguin stayed for nine weeks from the end of October 1888. Outside from the window next to the bed is Plaza Lamartine. In 2016, three editions of "In Yare's Bedroom" were brought together for the "Van Gogh's Bedroom" exhibition at the Art Institute of Chicago, which also included digital reconstructions.
