The Japanese recognize the suggestive power of natural forms and the spiritual symbolism that pervades their surroundings. Zen has played a considerable role in deepening the aesthetic sensibility of the Japanese soul and ultimately in rooting it in a religious intuition born of a mystical understanding of nature. Zen has been a great creative power in the artistic, spiritual, and even political life of the Far East. In some respects it has formed the Japanese character and is simultaneously an expression of that character. The subtle and pervasive influence of Zen can be seen in the thoughts and feelings, in the art, literature, and behavior of the Japanese. Shapes of Japan draws inspiration from many of these deeply Japanese themes.

Michael Kenna explores the theme of Japan's geographic location with his first track SEA, Surrounded by the Sea. Isolation plays the role of both form and formative power. The land itself seems to be a symbol of power, repeatedly giving rise to new forms. It is a force for both destruction and conservation. In trees, the forms of transformation are perceived as a process of constant development. The tree that bloomed last year is not the same one that blooms this year. It is a symbol of transience and also of triumph over the current condition. The Spirit takes forms of plenitude from various areas of Japanese culture and visualizes rituals, reflection, concentration, the search for perfection. Fullness is perceived as the quintessence of the above. In the fifth theme, Heaven, it seems to dissolve or dissipate.

Empty space creates simplicity and simplicity. They provide the necessary margin to be able to absorb a wide variety of thoughts and feelings. It is the same principle that underlies the world of Japanese myth and communication through the void. This provides space for one's own imagination, for the grace and beauty of little things, for the unfolding of what lies between them.

In his photographs, Michael Kenna creates plenitude out of emptiness; makes the invisible visible. His photography seems to remain at a distance, and yet it is full of passion.
