Description

Painting background

Douanier's hut at Varengeville painted in 1882; oil on canvas: 60 cm x 73 cm; Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam. During his travels in the 1880s, the landscape Monet saw was very different from the landscape dominated by horizontal lines in the Seine Valley. He searched for coastlines and steep hills, and deliberately selected a few objects with distinctive features to paint. Bold contrasts between spaces, shapes and layers are frequently emphasized. In 1882, Monet was on the Normandy coast, drawing around (Pourville) and (Varengeville) on the western edge of Dieppe. He tried to represent the local cliffs. Among them, one of Monet's favorite subjects was a house perched on a cliff. coast guard field house. The cabin is at the upper end of a crevasse that winds inland. In the same year, Monet was in different weather conditions, from all possible angles: looking down or looking up. This hut has been drawn 18 times, in the painting this hut surrounded by mountains and sea appears in several silhouettes. Although Monet painted the subject many times, he never considered these works as an independent series. In this painting, the cabin is seen from the southeast, separated from the chasm by the cliff in the foreground. You can see the cliffs of Dieppe. in the distance in the painting. From 1881 onwards, through Durand-Changel and other art dealers in the late 1880s, Monet for the first time had a generally stable income. This way, Monet can dedicate more time to creating. At this time, Durand-Ruel urged Monet to improve his work in response to widespread criticism of Impressionism by critics during the 1870s. The Impressionists were happy when faced with a hastily drafted manuscript. On the cliff in the foreground there are relatively broken layers and patches of shadows, in contrast to the sunny slope further away, where the layers and colors of the sunny slope are constantly changing. The pale pinks and oranges highlight the greens, making this a much more vibrant image than Monet's masterpiece from a decade earlier.
