Painting background

In the fall of 1889, Munch returned to Norway to participate in the Autumn Painting Exhibition. In this exhibition, this work that represents his younger sister, Inge-Marie, once again caused a storm of protests among critics and the public after "The Sick Child." It is particularly unique because it differs from other works on display. The characters and landscape in the picture are depicted with a simple and fixed outline, the colors are relatively simple, and the brush strokes are concise and relaxed, reflecting the influence of Gauguin's artistic style on Munch.
