Painting background

Munch's life was full of physical and mental torture. In his later years, he seemed to have exhausted his life and appeared emaciated. Munch expressed his last years without any modification. The grandfather clock on the left is as old as he is and time passes mercilessly on the clock. The single bed on the right is decorated with bright lines, further confirming the loneliness of the old man. His expression was dull and his eyes were empty, lifeless.

It was as if he was willing to accept death calmly. Perhaps death is the best relief for him. In 1944, after finishing this simple farewell, he died. Art history considers Munch an artist of the fin de siècle because his works reflect the life of an entire generation in Europe. No other artist can penetrate people's souls like him and show the beauty and ugliness of the soul to the public. He is also beautiful and people dare to describe as nakedly as he does the ugliness of human instinct: it is the coexistence of good and evil, and the symbiosis of beauty and ugliness.
