In the Eastern Jin Dynasty, there was an eminent monk named Huiyuan, who made many contacts and had contacts with many celebrities. According to legend, he once lived in Donglin Temple on the northwestern foothills of Mount Lu and devoted himself to studying Buddhism. To express his determination, he took Huxi in front of the temple as a boundary and made an oath: "If you do not leave the house, you will not be seen in the world, and you cannot see off guests on Huxi Bridge."
However, once the poet Tao Yuanming and the Taoist priest Lu Xiujing visited, the three of them talked a lot and did not realize that it was getting late. Huiyuan sent them out of the mountain gate. Cheng suddenly heard the roar of tigers in the jungle on the cliff, and discovered with horror that he had already crossed the boundary of Tiger Creek. The three looked at each other, laughed and said goodbye. It is said that the descendants built the “Pavilion of Three Smiles” at the place where they separated to commemorate. For those who have many things, there is also a couplet: the bridge crosses the tiger stream, the three religions and the three fountains, the three people laughing; the lotus opens the monastery, a flower, a world, a leaf, a Tathagata.
The story of "Three Smiles at Tiger Creek" has circulated in the Tang Dynasty. As revealed in the couplet, it is a reflection of the integration trend of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism in the ideological world at that time. According to textual research, Shi Huiyuan and Tao Yuanming are from about the same time, and it is possible to communicate with each other, while Lu Xiujing lived a hundred years later, so the "three smiles" theory is purely fictional. However, this topic has become increasingly popular as a beautiful talk that symbolizes the confluence of the three religions.
