Edvard Munch (December 12, 1863 – January 23, 1944) was a world-renowned Norwegian painter. His paintings are characterized by strong subjectivity and sad and depressive emotions. Picasso and Matisse have absorbed their artistic nourishment, and some artists from Germany and France have also been inspired by their works. His intense and evocative approach to psychological discomfort had a major influence on the growth of German Expressionism in the early 20th century. Munch was a painter of many talents and a unique style. During the sixty-three years since he was seventeen when he decided to dedicate himself to artistic creation until his death at the age of eighty in January 1944, he created more than 1,700 oil paintings, a large number of drawings and sketches, and 800 different works, thematic prints and colorful techniques full of energy. The most powerful characteristic of Munch's artistic works is that through landscapes, workers, portraits and self-portraits, he deeply expressed the transition from the discomfort of life to the anxiety of love, and from the fear of death to the acceptance of life. . His paintings also have the cold and penetrating influence of the Danish playwright Ibsen; and insists on representing the pain of love and the fear of death in life, reflecting the anxiety of the Nordic people about life. In Munch's paintings we can feel the helplessness of people before the irresistible power of sex: the mystery of life and sexual anxiety replace aesthetic romantic fear. "Puberty", "The Kiss", "The Scream", etc. They are all Munch's masterpieces. "The Scream" is one of the representative works of the Norwegian expressionist painter Edvard Munch. The main subject of the image is an expression of extreme pain on a blood red background, which originated from the eruption of the Krakatau volcano in Indonesia in 1883. The volcanic ash dyed the sky red. The location of the painting is the Oslo Fjord overlooking the Erkeberg mountain. Some people think that this work reflects the artistic conception of modern people invaded by existential anxiety. In 1890, Edvard Munch began creating the most important series of works of his life, the "Life Series." This set of paintings has a wide range of themes, with the basic theme of praising "life, love and death", and uses symbols and metaphors to reveal the concerns and fears of humanity at the "end of the century". The current work “The Scream” is the strongest and most stimulating painting in this series of paintings, and it is also one of his most important representative works. Munch is also closely associated with the avant-garde expressionist art movement that emerged in Germany and Austria in the early 20th century. The “Munch and Expressionism Exhibition” organized by the New Museum in New York in 2016 explored the relationship between Munch and the avant-garde expressionist art movement. Although the exhibition focuses on the final years of Munch's artistic career, The Scream, painted in 1895, still finds a place. Munch recorded the inspiration for "The Scream" in a diary entry from January 22, 1892: "I was walking with two friends against the setting sun – I felt a wave of melancholy – and suddenly the sky turned blood red... I stopped and leaned against the railing, exhausted to death – feeling the fiery red sky hanging over him like blood, cutting across the blue-black fjord and the city – my friend kept going – and I stood there anxious. I had to tremble – I felt the violent and endless scream that echoes in nature. The characters in "The Scream" may be Munch's self-portrait or his sister Sophie, who died when he was 13. It may also have arisen from his mentally ill sister, Catherine. Art historians also believe that the characters in "The Scream" may have another origin, which is a Peruvian mummy that Munch saw at the 1889 Paris World's Fair.
